Giving Daniel Day Lewis a run for his money in the 'Monster Performance' department is Philip Seymour Hoffman in the second teaser trailer for the upcoming quasi-Scientology drama, The Master. Hoffman of course is no stranger to director P.T. Anderson (Magnolia, Hard Eight, Punch Drunk Love), having starred in over after of the auteur's small but pristine filmography. In the past, Hoffman has been in supporting roles, but whether the actor is onscreen for 5 minutes or 120 minutes, he is going to own the picture as the L. Ron Hubbard-esque cult leader. Going tit for tat is Joaquin Phoenix, whom appears to be our guide into the strange mind of a cult leader, but is himself quite off-kilter. After an extended break and a strange documentary, I have little doubt that Phoenix will be turning in a mega-performance. The editing here is incredible. Am I gushing over a film I've not seen yet? Well the marketing made me do it. This is a perfect teaser trailer.
A 1950s-set drama centered on the relationship between a charismatic intellectual known as "the Master" whose faith-based organization begins to catch on in America, and a young drifter who becomes his right-hand man.
