Documenting a Street Icon: Getting down and dirty with “The Nasty”
Oceanside, CA - November 11, 2016 - The New York graffiti scene is a space that is dominated by men. Filmmaker, Carly Starr Brullo Niles, got unprecedented access into this world to create an intimate portrait of one of the world’s most renowned and influential graffiti artist, Julius Cavero, aka Terrible T-Kid 170. The documentary The Nasty Terrible T-Kid 170: Julius Cavero directed by Brullo Niles tells Cavero’s story through over 30 years of archival footage, interviews with some rarely seen figures in the graffiti world and through nighttime footage of Cavero and his crew putting up new are in public spaces.
What sets The Nasty apart from other films on this subject and in this genre is the vulnerability and the care that Brullo Niles brings to it. Through her thought provoking questions and in-depth interview style Cavero reveals the roots and purpose of his artistic passions with candor. Brullo Niles brought out a side to Cavero that had not been previously captured. Cavero is known for his larger than life personality and freight train like presence, but Brullo Niles brought out his vulnerability and heart.
Brullo Niles has won accolades and street cred for her work on this film. She and her team were honored at the Harlem International Film Festival with a New York Hi Lights Award and had the prestigious honor of being the festival closer. Brullo Niles was also honored with the Woman in Film Award at the San Diego International Film Festival from the San Diego Film Consortium.
