Night Visions 2016: November Edition Beckons With HIGH-RISE, THE WAILING, More

We hereby declare today Festival Announcement Day! The first wave of announcements from the November 2016 edition of the Night Visions International Film Festival has arrived, joining a bevy of other festivals making known their lineups in what could easily be described as a tidal wave of genre goodness.

Night Vision is the biggest genre film fest in the Nordic region. It's celebrating its 20th anniversary, which is truly remarkable. I attended the spring edition last year, surrounded by rabid fans who were very open to anything new and fresh. This November's edition features Finnish premieres of titles that should look splendid on the screens of Kinopalatsi cinema, located in the heart of Helsinki, a most beautiful city.

Here's the official verbiage:

-----

From the United Kingdom, the festival is extremely proud to introduce the audiences to Ben Wheatley's High-Rise, a decadent adaptation of the J.G. Ballard (Crash) novel of the same name, and featuring a stellar cast including Tom Hiddleston, Sienna Miller and Jeremy Irons.

From Ireland comes Billy O'Brien's striking psychological horror I Am Not A Serial Killer, featuring Christopher (Back to the Future) Lloyd in a highly substantial role.

The Wailing (Goksung) by Na Hong-jin received its World premiere in the official selection of the Cannes International Film Festival in May. This twisted story of possession and exorcism gone wrong went on to break box office records at its home turf in South Korea soon after the Cannes premiere.

The Master (Shi Fu) arrives to Helsinki from mainland China. The martial arts masterpiece set in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin of the 1930s is written and directed by Xu Haofeng, a Wu Xia author, film critic and martial artist also known as one of the screenwriters of Wong Kar-Wai's epic The Grandmaster (2013).

A slightly different and contemporary take on martial arts is on display in Karate Kill, written and directed by Kurando Mitsutake (Samurai Avenger, Gun Woman) of Japan.

From the North American front, the makeup FX artist -turned-director Geoff Redknap's sci-fi thriller The Unseen arrives from Canada to Helsinki for its Scandinavian premiere.

The ever-growing documentary section of Night Visions is spiced up by Rocco, the long-awaited feature length portrait of the legendary Italian adult entertainment star Rocco Siffredi, by the French director duo of Thierry Demaiziere and Alban Teurlai.

The ticket sales of all screenings of the Night Visions International Film Festival will start on Friday, October 21st, 2016 at www.finnkino.fi as well as all Finnkino cinemas across Finland.

The second wave of lineup announcements is due by the end of September, 2016.
