Oh, Ridley Scott, you're wacky. Also, Joel Edgerton: Bald is not a good look for you.

Dominant White male American propaganda continues to be an ugly festering sore in the side of American media. They love to go with their excuse of "well this is what people want to see" but its never been true and doesn't hold water anymore. Hopefully people will speak not just with their wallets, but also type scathing reviews about the white washing too. Without stating why we didnt go see it the studios will just say "oh I guess Christian Bale isnt hot anymore"

  • owen

just fucking die you racist fucker

  • CCBanks

ONLY IN THE MIND OF A DISGUSTING TEA PARTY TURD RACIST, is complaining about systemic racism, "RACIST". FOAD. (Fck off and die).

  • Ana

i think you pretty much missed the entire point of what he said. grow up.

  • owen

It's not just that comment the guy is going around spewing hate on other site's as well

  • lesterThejester

You really missed the entire point of what he said.

  • simha

well you know it's not like middle easterners aren't white.
    there are even blond arabs.
lots of red heads, brown haired people etc.
    it's not totally unfeasible.
the real goof here is the entire movie since it's historically accepted that moses didn't exist.

  • DougyRT

Middle Easterners? EGYPT IS IN AFRICA. Why do people like to forget that? And Egypt NOW is different than Egypt THEN. Its like looking at America in 2014 and saying "lots of red heads, blondes, its not totally unfeasible that the Indians looked the same way too." You realize how utterly ignorant that sounds right?

  • simha

because while egypt is in africa, racially speaking it is middle eastern not african.
you realize that i'm talking about even back then when there was tons of trades and migration right?

  • Roger Stetson

It is middle eastern But the area most likely was a lot more Black African in it's early days and increased in mixture through the increase in trade war and travel.

  • simha

sure but the ruling class was greek.

  • Roger Stetson

In the Post-Alexander Ptolemaic period. This was Egypt's last Pharaonic dynasty before Roman conquest.

  • simha

    i c.

    As you have no idea where Egyptians comes from. Here it is;
North Africa and Arabia, the Levant through to Northern India and Europe, consist of caucasian people. Africa South of the Saharan dessert consists of negroids. Egyptians has never been negriods for 30 000 years. Most Egyptians has DNA R1B = Whites. If a person works under the hot sun all day, you get Brown. Blue eyes and blond hair belongs mostly to Northern Europe.

  • simha

    lol wut.

    levant through 'northern india'

what the fuck are you talking about?

    arabs are not Indians.

    >Stuart Tyson Smith writes in the 2001 Oxford Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt that "Any characterization of race of the ancient Egyptians depends on modern cultural definitions, not on scientific study. Thus, by modern American standards it is reasonable to characterize the Egyptians as 'black', while acknowledging the scientific evidence for the physical diversity of Africans.”

most egyptians today are a mixture of the arabs that had migrated into the area and the egyptians that were living there.

it sounds like you're on some personal mission and you aren't willing to listen to reason or facts.

  • Roger Stetson

If it feels necessary for you to believe this, carry on.

  • There was also a very strong Nubian presence in ancient Egypt, and the Nubians very definitely were black. There were class divides, to be sure, but it was a mixed culture.

And the 'Brown'-ness is not a tan. Indians are also genetically caucasian, but not white.

  • simha

what do you mean 'genetically caucasian'?
    such a thing doesn't exist.
race is a social construct, not a genetic one.

  • Roger Stetson

Indians( and other members of the south Asian Subcontinent) as a whole share many genes with Caucasians, the also tend to share quite a lot of Australoid, East Asian (Mongoloid) and sometimes more rarely African (Negroid) in certain areas.

  • simha

they do not tend to share genes w/ australoids.
you'll find those people in papa new guinea and borneo and those islands.
you'll find some australoid people in Andaman and nicobar islands but they've all but died out.
negroid because we have some africans that were given as slaves to a king but they're a very small minority.
    (#ing in the thousands maybe)

  • Emperor

10 000 years of tan and they are still from Mongolia.

  • Roger Stetson

Yes there many types of middle easterners. Hoping that egyptians and jews looked as white as they can get betrays an unfortunate racial bias and more than likely inaccurate ethnography and history. I'm not sure if Moses existed, but I'm pretty sure it's not definitive that he did not exist.

  • simha

it's about as definitive as zeus existing or apollo.
there is no historicity to moses and all evidence points to the contrary.
but anyway i doubt anyone will listen.

  • Niels Andersen

White people aside; why does movies of this kind have to look so damn fake? I´m tired of monochromatic extremely fake looking CGI effects, that make cardboard and plaster sets of yesteryear look like documentaries.

  • Rage72

LOL! 2014 and Hollywood still doesn't know how to cast a film about Egyptians...

  • Emperor

Hollywood should use an egyptian cast and no negroes.

  • Guest

You're an ass! And a digusting racists.

  • Emperor

Whats wrong With egyptians? You are the racist.

  • Heck, I'll stick with The Prince of Egypt.

  • Kurt

AGORA remains the best modern sword & sandal epic, and this does NOT look like it is going to come anywhere close to challenging it either visually, idea-wise, acting, or overall execution.

  • Roger Stetson

Agora went for the whole white Egypt look as well. Though it was Roman Egypt does not mean the citizens lost their pigment.

  • Kate Colvin

I don't think Agora is *quite* as bad about this; Rachel Weisz being the lead is definitely an issue (my own desperate crush on her notwithstanding), but at least you've got co-stars of color - Max Minghella (of Parsi heritage), Homayoun Ershadi (Iranian), Sami Samir (Egyptian/Israeli), Manuel Cauchi (Maltese), Oshri Cohen (Israeli), and Yousef Sweid (Israeli). Oscar Isaac, is a POC, too, but...not sure there were tons of Guatemalan/Cubans running around in Egypt at that time...

  • Roger Stetson

Thanks, Kate. I think Rachel Weisz probably looks closer to Hypatia, and yes the other actors were not anglos/northern Europeans but the vast majority were on a pale Mediterranean continuum . Definitely none with significant African ancestry, Beige was about the darkest the cast got ;) .Even Egyptians today, after so many incursions from the Levant and Europe look more diverse than they do in Agora. I think the film is actually pretty good and I enjoy the director's work, and crush on Weisz hard, but it was disappointing that it missed an opportunity to be much more refreshing, adventurous and accurate. That's all.

  • Kate Colvin

    Very good points.

  • Agreed.

  • Yojimbo

With a cover of the song "Belfast Child" by Simple Minds no less?
