THE GRANDMASTER Leads Taiwan's Golden Horse Award Nominations
Widely regarded as the foremost awards ceremony in Asian Cinema, Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards announced the nominees for its 50th Anniversary edition earlier today, and it should come as little surprise to see Wong Kar Wai's martial arts epic The Grandmaster leading the pack with a whopping 11 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress - though notably missing out in the Best Screenplay category.

Wong's Ip Man biopic will face healthy competition, however, from Anthony Chen's Ilo Ilo, Jia Zhangke's A Touch of Sin, Feng Xiaogang's Back to 1942,  Dante Lam's Unbeatable and Stephen Chow & Derek Kwok's Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons - all of which bagged 6 nominations, despite only the first two listed here garnering a Best Film nod. That category is rounded out by Johnnie To's Drug War and Tsai Ming Liang's Stray Dogs.

Other notable nominations include Best New Director nominations for actor-turned-directors Zhao Wei and Juno Mak (for So Young and Rigor Mortis respectively), while Hong Kong newcomer Cherry Ngan is named in the Best Actress category (as opposed to the Best New Performer category) for her sprightly turn in The Way We Dance, which also picked up a surprise mention in the Best Action Choreography category.

The 50th Golden Horse Awards will be announced on 23 November 2013 in Taipei.
