Hey, Toronto! Indulge In Some MISERY On The Big Screen!
This one is screening from an archival 35mm print, so it's going to look gorgeous! Come on out! When famed potboiler novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is badly injured in a car accident during a snowstorm, he is rescued by local nurse -- and Sheldon's self-professed "number-one fan" -- Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), who is thrilled to discover that she is tending to her literary idol in her remote Colorado cottage. But when Annie discovers that Paul has killed off his much-loved main character Misery Chastain in his new novel, this seeming angel of mercy turns into a she-devil incarnate, as Annie uses all the excruciatingly painful means at her disposal to coerce the beleaguered wordsmith into resurrecting her late lamented Misery. Exploring the darker side of King territory after the golden-hued nostalgia of Stand by Me, director Rob Reiner scored another critical and commercial hit with Misery, not to mention guiding Bates to a career-defining performance (and a Best Actress Oscar) as the seriously disturbed Annie, who still stands as one of the most memorable female villains in screen history.
