Watch the Trailer For Stephen Gaghan's CALL OF DUTY: GHOSTS
Yep, you read that right. The Academy Award winning writer of Traffic and director of Syriana Stephen Gaghan has lent his pen to the phenomenally successful Call of Duty game franchise, writing the story (and presumably the screenplay) for the next installment in the series, Call of Duty: Ghosts. Apparently Gaghan didn't just drop off a script but worked from an office at developer Infinity Ward throughout the game's production.

As a fan of the series and as a massive fan of Syriana which was my favourite film of 2005, this is fantastic news. While playing Black Ops with Sam Worthington's voice was oddly jarring, I think this will be a much more seamless fit while adding more depth to the gameplay experience. Syriana was pretty good but Traffic was a snooze fest. I dont think this is a good fit. Michael Bay would be better

I really don't see what this has to do with movie news and feels more like promotion for the new xbox one. Even if you strip away the game the story in COD games are just meatheaded jingoism and is about as subtle as a train wreck with its writing. Even if you get award winning writers and directors, Activison will sink their claws into it and dilute it down for mass market appeal like all COD games.

I have to disagree with every part of you comment. In my opinion videogames are now in the same position like TV series were about ten years ago (any by now TV series get episode reviews at Twitch). Each year they are proving to be much more creative and inventive not just in terms of entertainment, but also regarding storytelling and conveying emotions than cinema. Think of the CoD series as the videogame equivalent of Band of Brothers – an influential series that attracted hundreds of thousands of mainstream-oriented people towards its respective medium and showed them its strengths and possibilities. It pawed the way for other titles which were also ambitious not just in terms of its scope but also in terms of narrative and artistic goals. Also, just because loads of people do see CoD as only brainless shooters and military bravado, does not mean it really has no artistic value. Sure, Activision is not among the bravest of companies and they threw out the people who were aspiring to do more than just a straightforward spectacle. But it was CoD: Modern Warfare 2 which dared to face gamers with serious questions regarding the legitimacy of ethically questionable actions during war. Sure, whether the writer of Traffic brings anything else to the table than just more over-the-top pathos and spectacle remains to be seen. But nobody can deny that it was the mass success of CoD and other mainstream titles aimed at grown-up people that helped the whole industry to evolve and get it to its current state where you have daring narrative videogames like Far Cry 3, Spec Ops: The Line or even Beyond: Two Souls and many, many more (not to mention the ones outside of the mainstream).

I wrote it because I wanted to. I weighed it against everything else I cover and found it worthy of reader interest. If the game hadn't hired a film writer and director of one of the most brilliant films of the 2000s then there would be no reason, I agree, but the fact that it has is very good reason.

Sorry you feel it's advertising, I have no interest in writing fluff copy. I don't own an xbox, have never played one and until you said this had no conscious idea the game was associated with it to be honest. I pay zero attention to game consoles and very much live in the world of PCs. Also I'm Australian, and not interested in American jingoism besides from a cultural observation point of view. I do however believe in escapism and entertainment which is why I've played the games previously. Plus being immersed in a game storyworld is quite an incredible experience for someone like me who has only recently returned to games after about a decade away. All this drives my interest in this, and my interest drives my writing. Anyway, thanks for reading, and feedback is appreciated. It helps me refine what I write.
