Busan 2011: PINK review

Busan 2011: PINK review
A dank seaside bar named Pink plays a central role in the story of two women fighting their own struggles. The backdrop is the city of Busan, a city that is in the midst of demolition and reconstruction.

Director Jeon Soo-il, based in Busan, has brought us eight full feature films in the past twelve years. His films often give the view time to reflect on their own life. Most of his films particularly, My Right to Ravage Myself, succeed both cinematically and in stirring the viewers emotions. Here we are given a slow plot build up and Jeon's trademarked subtle style. That is not to say that the viewer has a chance to be bored. Each character has their points of curiosity and intrigue. Jeon's camera stays in the background never approaching our characters head on.

The two women played Seo Gap-suk and Lee Seung-yun have many obstacles trust in the way their own reconstruction. The most central of these is that of the bar owner's young autistic son Sang-gook. Sang-gook is played by Park Hyun-woo and though he delivers no lines in the entire film one can discern his emotional state quite easily. All the actors deliver each line with a laid back attitude that fits the town and the director's style.

The film begs one to question the idea of progress both emotionally and within the city. The residents are told to move out of the way of progress. Some twenty protesters wait for something to happen in front of city hall, but all is in vain as the decisions have been made and these residents themselves seem to lack any power.

In the end the viewer is given a long single shot of our guitar player and the view of our bar Pink. Held so that you hear the full song played Jeon gives a chance to reflect on his story. This film works in many ways, however it deals with some taboo topics. Pink is a very interesting film, but there is little chance for commercial success here.
