SyFy: Stargate Universe Season 2!
So where were we? Oh yes. The Lucian Alliance had taken over Destiny while the ship is being bombarded with deadly pulsar radiation threatening everyone inside! Lt. Scott and Sgt. Greer were outside the ship attempting to get the FTL drive going then ended up trapped outside the ship and trying to find a way back in before the next pulsar wave hit Destiny. A firefight has left the pregnant Lt. Johansen lying on the floor bleeding and Col. Young was sequestered into another room with his military personnel. Eli and Chloe are hiding in an unknown part of the ship and she has been shot in the leg. Dr. Rush is in another control room trying to regain control of Destiny and Commander Kiva of the Lucien Alliance and Col. Telford have shot each other and no one knows that. As Eli puts it in the season two premiere of SGU, 'Just another day in outer space'.

For a season premiere it's... okay. Tension builds and escalates amongst the ranks of the Lucian Alliance soldiers as power shifts from one to another. The uncertainty of Lt. Johansen and her baby's fate is brought into question throughout the episode. Will Col. Young and his crew be able to regain control of the ship before the next wave of pulsar radiation slams into Destiny? Well der. It's a given. Surely, all of the questions from the end of season one are more or less answered in the opening episode, 'Intervention'. But any writing team worth its salt will accomplish that while starting to create new ones. And there are some new mysteries to be uncovered throughout season two.

Rush is still hiding secrets from Young and the rest of the stranded crew aboard Destiny as you will find out in the second episode of the season 'Aftermath'. The more Rush uncovers about the true nature of Destiny the more he has to hide from everyone else and he will soon discover that there are ramifications for his decision to keep these discoveries to himself. For now. And Col. Young will have to respond to a very difficult request from one of his crew members in the episode as well.

So while shows like Warehouse 13 and Eureka get to play on the swings and yell 'Whee' SGU gets to play in the gritty sandbox. I for one like it - a lot - which caught even me by surprise because I have never been a SG1 or Atlantis watcher. I'm sure I wrote about SGU before at one point but simply cannot find any reference to it in our archives so if I am repeating myself then blame our search engine. SGU bridges the gap between the massive void left behind by BSG and entertaining SciFi shows like WH13 and Eureka. And while both of those shows have had very strong seasons they don't necessarily fill our need for something darker and edgier.

It took SGU a good few episodes to really get going but it found its pacing part way through the first half of the season. And having no previous association with either of the two previous incantations I sure found it easy to get into this series and quick. Fans of the previous two series can compare to their hearts content and decide whether or not it is a worthy addition but I for one need the edgy and darker series to balance out my own television universe.

SGU moves to Tuesday nights on September 28th at 9pm ET.
