Is Tsui Hark Back On Form? The Trailer For DETECTIVE DEE Says Yes.
Now, before going any further I should remind readers - and myself - that the trailer for Tsui Hark's Seven Swords was also a thing to behold and one that promised a resounding return to peak form from a man who was once one of world cinema's true greats. But then the movie came and proved to be a bit of a muddled mess. That said ...

The first trailer for Tsui Hark's Detective Dee has just arrived and the martial arts fantasy look absolutely sumptuous. It should, really, because it's been in the works for ages now but it looks like that time has been well spent, indeed.

Andy Lau takes the lead for this one - and, hard as it is to believe, I think this may be the first time actor and director have worked together - with Sammo Hung handling the action sequences. Release is slated for late September.

When the mysterious deaths of a series of loyal subjects threaten to delay the 690 A.D. inauguration of Empress Wu Zetian, China's only female leader, she summons the infamous Detective Dee back from an exile into which she cast him eight years earlier.
