Angel of Death DVD Review

Angel of Death is the creation of fan-favorite comic book writer Ed Brubaker. Starting as a web series, its now available on DVD with additional footage. The film features a combination of style approaches...part crime noir and part 1970s grindhouse violence. At 77 minutes Angel of Death is a short, simplistic film. The plot is laid out within the first 15 - 20 minutes and you're quickly swept up in a near out-of-control ride of gun battles and martial arts fights. The action, particularly the physical fights, are choreographed to perfection and done with an air of realism. The movements are not sped up nor are the sounds of the punches and kicks accentuated as you find with many similar Asian films. Bell is at her best when she's fighting. She looks authentic and frankly, takes one hell of a beating throughout the film, although she gives as good as she receives.

Bell doesn't quite have the range to pull off some of the non-action scenes, particularly when it comes to showing emotions. These come off as stiff and forced. Fortunately she's not asked to carry the film and is surrounded by a capable cast that includes cameos from Lucy Lawless ( Bell played her stunt double in Xena) and Ted Raimi. Doug Jones is especially fun as her squeamish, drug-addicted doctor. On the other hand, Lucy Lawless playing Eve's over-curious and wacky neighbor adds virtually nothing to the film but I guess without her we'd be looking at a film less than 70 minutes long.

Those you enjoy Brubaker's comic book work are almost sure to love the film as his style of writing and dialogue are evident. Angel of Death is a fun shoot/beat-'em-up film with outstanding stunt work and a tough female protagonist.
