Have Your Say: What Is Your Favorite Studio Ghibli Film?
This week (yesterday on June 15th to be precise) it was exactly 30 years ago that Studio Ghibli was founded, and work on its first film started. Which was not Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, as many people believe, but Laputa: Castle in the Sky, though it had been the success of Nausicaä which allowed its creative team to start an animation studio of their own.

In those 30 years, Studio Ghibli managed an unbelievably high general level of quality, with almost each single movie an artistic triumph, even though it would take some time for commercial success to arrive at its gates. Two of its founding fathers are among the best directors alive today, worldwide, in animated films or otherwise: Miyazaki Hayao and Takahata Isao.

But with those two geniuses currently not making movies, Studio Ghibli recently ground to a halt. Instead of cashing in on the brand, the studio heads decided to stop making theatrical films unless a truly promising project would present itself, and the summer of 2014 saw what may be Studio Ghibli's last theatrical production in a while, and maybe ever: When Marnie Was There.

Still, there is still life in the dormant former giant: work is being done on short films and co-productions. And who knows: Takahata never officially retired (though he'll turn 80 this year), and maybe Miyazaki will get into a fight with either Oshii Mamoru or Hosoda Mamoru, and furiously start work on a new brilliant film just to prove a point. Hey, I can always hope!

But even if Studio Ghibli really never makes another film ever again, what an incredible legacy will it leave behind...

Which brings us to the question of the week: in the three decades of its existence, Studio Ghibli produced many beloved films. Which of these is your favorite? I know each of them has its fans, even those deemed the most mediocre of the lot.

Do you go for one of the most famous ones? A Miyazaki? A Takahata? Or more obscure?
