With the capable and unpredictable curation of Peter Kuplowsky and his team of brave pre-screeners, the Midnight Madness (MM) sidebar at the Toronto International Film Festival continues to be one of the favourite parts of TIFF here at Screen Anarchy.
The loaded line-up just dropped, and it has some special treats in there, including Rogue Trooper, the latest film from Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) opening MM, and The Love Witch director, Anna Biller's follow up, The Face Of Horror (pictured above) closing the sidebar.
For those who have never had the treat of a Matt Barats film or performance, I hope Anchors Aweigh is the dead pan auteur's coming out party. (We have covered some of his previous work in Cash Cow, as well as the Reveries films.)
Oscar-nominated (Universal Language) director Matthew Rankin returns to the Royal Alexandra stage (after previously presenting The Twentieth Century in 2019) with another 'political-biographical-miasma,' Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney.
And the MM mayhem expands this year, with a special screening of Na Hong-jin’s sci-fi action thriller Hope starring Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, and Jung Hoyeon on Wednesday, September 9, the eve before Festival; and a “return to where it all started” screening of Focus Features and writer-director Curry Barker’s breakout Obsession on Friday, September 11.
If you are one of the legion of fans of last year's MM success story, TIFF: The Market will host an onstage moderated Dialogues conversation with director Curry Barker and star Inde Navarrette as part of the seven-day Summit at the John Bassett Theatre; accessible by pass holders and public ticket holders.
