When distributor Arrow announced they were going to release a boxset of all four
Female Prisoner Scorpion films, it was one of those moments when we raise flags here at Screen Anarchy central. I mean, these films are rightfully known as classics in the Japanese exploitation genre, and their star Kaji Meiko is iconic.
Seven years ago, Eureka had released the first three films as a boxset on DVD, so Arrow's announcement was also a bit of a surprise. Well, the end result is finally in stores, and meets all expectations. All films look damn good and the discs are loaded with extras. I mean, when the contributor-list includes names like Jasper Sharp, Tom Mes, Marc Walkow, Gareth Evans and Kier-La Janisse, you know you have reason to be happy.
The boxset's packaging also looks pretty spiffy, so check out this gallery of shots. Click on the edge of the pictures to scroll through them, or at the centre of each to see a bigger version.
And here it is, a nice and sturdy hard cardboard box.
And the box is jammed full as well. Not much air in this one...
The contents displayed: the four films on blu-ray and DVD, a 56-page hardcover booklet, and a double-sided poster. I love the designs on the front covers.
The covers (and poster) are reversible, so you can have the original Japanese posters on the front of each Amaray, if you want.
Finally, we take a closer look at the booklet. It's a hardcover with 56 pages.
Inside, there are essays and interviews, and plenty of posters and pictures. A very cool addition to a very cool boxset!
