Pause for a moment and take in the overwhelmingly beautiful and emotionally charged trailer for Tran Anh Hung's French language period drama Eternity. Mercy.
At the end of the 19th century, Valentine, aged 20, married Jules.Towards the end of the 20th century, a young Parisian woman crosses a bridge on her way to a party thrown by her cousin. There, she meets a young man.Later, she becomes his wife and the loving mother to their child. In the interim, between the two World Wars, two couples formed a quartet that was so close that after the death of one of the husbands and the wife of the other couple, the two families came together in a Paris apartment, 16 of them sitting round the table.
Tran does not make a lot of films. We are talking of a pace similar to that of, say, a Terrence Malick. The director of Norwegian Wood (2010) and The Scent of Green Papaya (1993) would appear to be good for presenting a considerable effort every few years though. Golly does this film look gorgeous, meticulous and enveloped by a broad emotional spectrum.
Audrey Tautou (Mood Indigo and Amelie), Mélanie Laurent (Inglorious Basterds and Enemy), Bérénice Béjo (The Artist and OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies) and Jérémie Renier (Saint Laurent) lead the cast.
Eternity will begin to roll out in Europe starting at the end of August in Switzerland then France on September 7th. There do not appear to be any details about North American distribution on the production company's website.
