I first saw the film at Sitges back in 2014, where I was serving on the Animated Shorts Jury. As soon as Pineapple Calamari unfolded before me, the competition - in my eyes at least - was over. When it came to our deliberations, my fellow jurors were of the same opinion, and we awarded the film the category's top prize - one of many such awards Nalewajka's film - which she co-wrote with Daniel Negret and Manuela Lupini - won on the circuit that year.
Today, the creators of Pineapple Calamari have released it online, in all its horse-riding, whisky chugging, frog-tossing glory for you to enjoy. But don't take my word for it, just hit play on the video below and delight in the twisted majesty of Pineapple Calamari.
