Of course you don't need to actually overcrank anything anymore to get a nice slo-mo effect these days: ever since The Matrix, we can do even more extreme things and freeze time completely, by using multiple cameras and/or computers.
As everything tends to look more epic or threatening when seen in slo-mo, it is an often-used trick in the filmmaking toolbox, especially in action scenes. And what would Deadpool be without slo-mo? He wouldn't even have time enough to crack jokes without it!
