I watched Madre de Dios last night and all I could express to Gigi afterwards was worry and concern for her well-being. Yeah. It is that kind of crazy. She ventures back once again to her Mexican heritage; at least I think she does. I do not want to know any more about that context than that. If you have seen any of Gigi's previous works like current festival traveller El Gigante and Dia De La Muertos you already have an idea how great the art direction is and how effed up the content is. It is a good kind of crazy.A woman wakes up bound to an altar, helpless as she is transformed into a flesh and blood statue of Santa Muerte by two elderly Brujos whose sole purpose is to conjure the anti-Christ into our plane of existence.
Madre de Dios also marks the first time Gigi worked with nudity in her film. So you think to yourself, great, Tristan Risk au naturel is not a bad thing at all. Yeah, no. That mindset will change real quick a couple minutes into Madre. Tristan is a striking young woman but the nudity in Madre is titillating for maybe a few heartbeats.
I do not know when Gigi will make her new short film public; I imagine Madre will go onto the festival circuit first, and for a while. Enjoy the trailer for Madre de Dios from two of Canada's rising female horror talents.
