In one of the more unusual crowdfunding videos I've seen, Josefina Ramirez talks about her method of choosing roles: "I don't have to read scripts ... Just tell me the theme, and from that I make my own deductions."
Now, granted, Ms. Ramirez is, apparently, the grandmother of filmmaker Camila José Donoso, and has only one film appearance listed in IMDb -- namely, her granddaughter's directorial debut, Naomi Campbel -- but still, her boldness is much appreciated, and made me more curious about the project, which I first heard about from a tipster who emailed us about it.
From the official synopsis (word substitutions mine):
Nona (66) lives self-exiled in a forest where strange fires happen. The police investigate and the neighbors speculate. The houses burn mysteriously. Seven years ago Nona had love affairs with three men. Jealousy creates a scene [filled with acts of vandalism], where revenge and fire are part of the [transformation]."
The rough charm of the video makes it worth watching, an intriguing mixture of rough footage and captivating images. The crowdfunding campaign is quite modest; the film is a co-production between Altamar Films (France) and Bubbles Project (Brazil), with plans to shoot on location in Chile (Pichilemu, a little coastal town) and Santiago (the capital city), later this year and into early 2016.
