Fantaspoa, the largest genre cinema celebration in Latin America, revealed the (amazing) full lineup for its upcoming eleventh edition, to be celebrated in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil from May 15 to 31.
Fantaspoa's main competition, the international one, is usually massive and this year won't be the exception. More than 30 films are part of this section, including the hilarious vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, the Norwegian Nazi zombie sequel Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead, the latest films by Adrián García Bogliano (both Late Phases and Scherzo Diabolico), and the horror comedy WolfCop.
For 2015, Fantaspoa kept the Ibero-America competition - which is dominated by Argentina, Spain and Mexico - but added a special section exclusively for Brazilian productions. The splatter anthology The Black Fables, which marks the return of Brazilian cult master José Mojica Marins aka Coffin Joe, is definitely the highlight of the brand new Brazilian competition section.
As ScreenAnarchy already reported, Fantaspoa is set to honor both Dennis Paoli and Fabio Frizzi for their contributions to horror cinema. In order to celebrate these masters, the festival programed a couple of movies by Stuart Gordon (for which Paoli is credited as screenwriter) and Lucio Fulci (with music by Frizzi). In addition, there's going to be an amazing Frizzi live concert dedicated to the late Fulci, called "De Frizzi a Fulci."
The final section of Fantaspoa XI is that of the special screenings. It includes two mini-retrospectives dedicated to Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and the Dutch duo Steffen Haars and Flip Van der Kuil, plus a screening of the rare Jess Franco picture Revenge in the House of Usher.
