'71's Yann Demange In Talks To Tackle Corrupt Cops In THE SEVEN FIVE

Deadline is reporting that '71 director Yann Demange is in final negotiations with Sony Pictures to take the helm for The Seven Five the feature adaptation of 2014 documentary by the same name directed by Tiller Russell

(The) documentary (was) about one of the most corrupt police forces in 1980s New York, The Seven Five focuses on Michael Dowd, who was arrested in 1992 arrest for leading a ring of dirty cops for the best part of eight years between 1986-1992. Their crimes included theft, abuse and drug dealing. Dowd's case exposed widespread corruption in the NYPD and sent him to prison for 14 years..

I just want to take a moment to reflect on a bit from Todd's review of '71 when it screened at TIFF,

Demange is a world builder, not in the fantastical sense but in the sense that he crafts exquisitely nuanced, complex, and morally gray worlds that feel exceedingly natural and authentic. Though phenomenally gifted on the technical side of things he is also something of an anti-showman, his most complex and difficult feats employed without fanfare to bolster these natural worlds rather than overwhelm them.

The documentary's producer Eli Holzman will produce along with John Lesher and Megan Ellison. The report at Deadline noted that two produced awards contenders Birdman and Foxcatcher respectively. Their experience and clout, combined with Demange's growing reputation as a director who can handle the gritty stuff skilfully make this a film we will certainly keep an eye on.
