Starring Juliette Binoche, Rinko Kukuchi, and Gabriel Byrne, little is known of the plot of the film, beyond that it's set in 1908 in Greenland and is an "adventure film focuses on courageous women and ambitious men who put anything at stake for love and glory."
Berlinale director Dieter Kosslick has said that he is "very pleased that Nobody Wants the Night will open the 2015 Berlinale. Isabel Coixet has created an impressive and perceptive portrait of two women in extreme circumstances." Kosslick noted that this will also be the first film to be screened in Dolby Atmos® in at Berlinale Palast.
Coixet (My Life Without Me, The Secret Life of Words, Elegy) is known for films about people in extraordinary circumstances, combining the intimacy of the personal with the fragile state of humanity. This looks to be quite epic geographically, Also, I applaud a major festival for opening with a film by a female director with female leads; she's also the first Spanish director whose film will open the festival. Given the director, cast and setting, I'll be there with bells on.
Also to play at the festival (announced so far) include Fifty Shades of Grey (that should be interesting), Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella, Knight of Cups (Terrence Malick), the latest Peter Greenaway Eisenstein in Guanajuanto, and Andrew Haigh (director of Weekend)'s 45 Years, starring Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay.
