THE GOOD DINOSAUR: New Image And Plot Changes Revealed

If you've been feeling blue and downhearted lately, perhaps it's because Pixar has not released a movie this year, which the company intends to remedy by releasing two movies next year.

The first, Inside Out, focuses on emotions warring inside a young girl's mind; it's due on June 19, 2015. The second, The Good Dinosaur, has been more problematic. It was originally scheduled for May 30, 2014, but last year it was delayed to November 25, 2015. About a month before that announcement came word that director Bob Peterson was being removed from his position.

Peter Sohn, a Pixar veteran, replaced Peterson, though that announcement was not made until recently. Now more details have emerged, via Los Angeles Times, indicating that the story itself has been "streamlined." Reportedly, Peterson was "creatively stuck" and was "proving too slow to make important story decisions." Sohn had been working as Peterson's co-director before taking over the reins.

As in Peterson's version, the film still posits that an asteroid never hit the Earth and the dinosaurs never went extinct; a teenage Apatosaurus named Arlo takes a wild, young human boy named Spot as a pet.

Sohn has jettisoned some of Peterson's signature ideas, such as modeling the dinosaurs on Amish farmers, and added new elements, including treating nature as the film's antagonist.

"When Bob was taken off, I was supporting the film as best I could," Sohn said. "It felt like, this child, this film still needs to be raised. It was just about how to take care of the thing at that time. ... Trying to keep the original vision of this film intact and trying to plus it as well."

As the article notes, animated feature films are in active production for far longer than live-action projects, and so these kind of changes are not unusual. We'll have to wait another year to find out if the new Dinosaur is truly Good
