This is great news. Grady Hendrix's latest novel, the haunted furniture retail outlet novel Horrorstör, will be adapted for a television series, according to Deadline. The novel hit bookstore shelves only last month. The adaptation will be produced by The Jackel Group, a co-venture between Fox News Network and Gail Berman, who started Jackel earlier this year. Hendrix will serve as a consultant.
Horrorstör takes place at an Ikea knockoff store called Orsk. Amy is one of the many employees who shamble in every morning to sell Orsk's own version of assemble-it-yourself furniture. But lately strange things have been happening in the store at night. Furniture is ruined and stock is destroyed. Before corporate gets involved, Amy and fellow employee Ruth-Anne are recruited by team leader Basil to spend the night in the store and find out who, or what, is doing all this. Add a couple of aspiring ghost hunters, a transient, and an ominous past with the building's location, and you have a recipe for thrills and chills.
Well I suppose this was simply a matter of time, though I expected it to be adapted to the big screen. I have read it a couple times already and shared my thoughts about it with Hendrix. Many friends have told him how cinematic the book reads and I agree with them. I saw many of the scenes unfold as images on a screen, thinking, how would that play out on camera.
Horrorstör is plenty creepy and a few events in the book made me crawl up into myself. I suppose I must have looked funny cringing and grimacing at what looks like an IKEA catalog from the outside as I rode the bus to work. I cannot wait to see what the adaptation will be like.
