There will also be an exhibition called My Way, Lau Kar-leung. Comic books artists have been called together to create original works inspired by the films in this years lineup and will be on display at the Anthology Films Archives during the fest. Below is the full lineup. The first director to treat kung fu realistically, pitting style against style (Northern Fist vs. Southern Leg! Monkey Boxing vs. Drunken Boxing!), he made movies where martial arts were a philosophy, where training elevated the soul, virtue was more important than survival, and invincible enemies were stabbed in the eardrums. Lau Kar-leung passed away last year at 78 years old, so we're unleashing five of his greatest movies (including Lau's masterpiece DIRTY HO, and the legendary 36th CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN, both on 35mm!) plus his show-stopping appearance in Sammo Hung'srarely-screened classic, PEDICAB DRIVER, as well as his and his brother'sunstoppable action choreography in Jimmy Wang's MASTER OF THE FLYINGGUILLOTINE, to pay tribute to the first true master of the martial arts cinema.
There are some recognizable titles in the mix and some rarely seen films including one from Korea, Canton Viper, that has never been screened on North American shores. Sammo Hung's Pedicab Driver is also a rarity and should be seen just for the fight between Sammo and Lau Kar-leung. And during the Super Secret Special Screening there will be announcements about this Summer's New York Asian Film Festival!Friday, April 186:00pm - CANTON VIPER7:45pm - 36th CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN10:30pm - PEDICAB DRIVERSaturday, April 191:00pm - 36th CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN3:30pm - CHALLENGE OF THE MASTERS5:30pm - HEROES OF THE EAST7:45pm - Super Special Secret Screening!!!10:00pm - MASTER OF THE FLYING GUILLOTINESunday, April 201:00pm - CANTON VIPER3:00pm - MASTER OF THE FLYING GUILLOTINE5:00pm - PEDICAB DRIVER7:00pm - DIRTY HO9:15pm - LEGENDARY WEAPONS OF CHINA
