The first trailer for Gareth Edwards' version of Godzilla makes a very strong case that it won't be another cookie-cutter blockbuster.
Edwards' first film, Monsters, struck me as "languid and dreamy," fulfilling his wish "to begin where every other monster movie ends." This teaser has the quality of a waking nightmare, as paratroopers parachute into a situation that none of them has ever experienced before.
The official synopsis is brief: "An epic rebirth to Toho's iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world's most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity's scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence."
Godzilla stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Juliette Binoche, and the big guy from Japan. It's heading to theaters on May 16, 2014. Watch the trailer below.
