Firestorm, directed by Alan Yuen, and starring Andy Lau, Gordon Lam and Hu Jun, scored a massive RMB165 million 4-day opening on the mainland, helped in part by higher-priced 3D ticket sales. The film, which tells the story of a dedicated cops efforts to take down a gang of violent thieves, opens in Hong Kong this week, and features unprecedented scenes of carnage on the city's streets. Its takings dwarfed those of Ning Hao's No Man's Land, which managed just RMB82 million in its second week.
Gordon Chan's The Four 2 and Benny Chan's The White Storm both continued to hold the 3rd and 4th spots respectively, ahead of Hollywood big hitters Gravity, Epic and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. However, Firestorm has already taken more than The Four 2, and looks set to usurp The White Storm's take this coming weekend.
More Chinese heavyhitters are on their way as we enter the holiday season. New Year comedy Personal Tailor, starring Ge You and He Bai Bai opens on 19 December, Jackie Chan's latest action thriller, Police Story 2013, co-starring Jing Tian and Liu Ye, opens on the 24th, while South Korean supernatural romance A Werewolf Boy also gets a mainland debut on 19 December.
