Continuing its impressive performance in cinemas around the world, Thor: The Dark World is the number one film in China for the second week running, with a sturdy RMB280million in its first 10 days on release. The film, directed by Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) and starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston, is the second solo outing for the Norse God and some-time Avenger and has now taken over US$480 million worldwide.
Of greater interest is the fact that Escape Plan, the throwback prison flick that sees 80s action legends Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger share top billing in a film for the first time in their careers, has so far amassed close to US$35 million (RMB208million) at the Chinese box office. In the US, where the film has been on release for a whole month already, Escape Plan has taken just US$24million, less than a quarter of its current worldwide take of US$102million.
Earlier in the summer, Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim also performed better in China than it did back home, adding further fuel to the arguement that China may well be on course to eclipse the USA as the world's most influential market even before the projected date of 2020.
Action sequel Red 2 debuted in third place, while Adam Sandler's Hallowe'en-themed animated comedy, Hotel Transylvania dropped to sixth place in a week that saw little else perform well. Most interestingly, however, is the fate of Russian war epic Stalingrad. The film scored a huge opening weekend earlier this month, but its ticket sales have dropped a whopping 500% in just two weeks. This is most likely to do with Thor cannibalising the screens, particularly IMAX screens. The Dark World's screening numbers doubled in its second week, while Stalingrad played close to 10% as many times as it did opening weekend.
Next week's box office figures are set to look very different, however, as Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity opened yesterday across China and is almost certain to secure a place at the top of next week's chart.
