Production studio/indie distributor/energy drink maker Red Bull Media House announced today their hybrid distribution plan for the Tribeca-premiering extreme-athlete-biodocu McConkey. Co-produced by Matchstick Productions, the film will hit the road starting October 5 with a host of one-night screenings in over 20 locations so far. Things kick off with a gala premiere in Squaw Valley, CA (Shane McConkey's hometown), before heading up the coast to Portland and Seattle and hitting such ski hotspots as Park City, Jackson Hole, and Whistler. Full week runs in LA and New York are also in store for the week of October 11.

As is the norm, VOD options will be fully available across the usual slew of platforms beginning October 8. That day will also see the collector's edition DVD/Blu-Ray go on sale. You can get many more details about this plan and even buy tickets and hard goods at mcconkeymovie.com.
If this plan sounds slightly familiar, it is the kind of hybrid plan we've seen more and more from indie filmmakers to release their films into a well-established fan base. This was wildly successful for Stacy Peralta and his Sundance 2012 docu Bones Brigade when he partnered with TopSpin Media to follow a similar plan (read about that here). RBMH will be going it alone with McConkey and it will be interesting to see if they are able to find success from this new trend in distribution.
