Melbourne 2013: MIFF Gets SO EXCITED For Opening Night

The opening night Australian premiere has just been revealed for the Melbourne International Film Festival (25th July - 11th August) and rather than an Aussie film we can all get behind (or feel alienated by) it is instead a renowned auteur's satirical whimsy; well OK then.

The 62nd Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) is thrilled to announce the 2013 Festival will open with the Australian Premiere of Pedro Almodóvar's hilarious comedy, I'm So Excited! Australia's biggest names in film and entertainment will add glitz and glamour to the red carpet as they celebrate the opening of the nation's most significant screen event before moving into the magnificent surrounds of Hamer Hall for the Opening Night screening.

Probably more exciting than the film is the prestigious Hamer Hall venue that was recently renovated from the ground-up.

MIFF Artistic Director Michelle Carey said, "Pedro Almodóvar's new film is the perfect way to kick off MIFF 2013. It's fun, bawdy and always stylish."

Told in vintage Almodóvarian style, I'm So Excited! is the story of a Mexico-bound flight that runs into trouble when its landing gear malfunctions, and is put in a holding pattern. On board, the flamboyant cabin crew deal with the situation by drugging economy class to sleep and breaking out the tequila and mescaline in business class, where the passengers include a virgin psychic, a dominatrix, a soap star and a corrupt banker.

I'm So Excited! marks the first of 18 days for MIFF, which includes well over 300 films from around the globe showcasing the work of the world's best filmmakers. The MIFF program will once again shine the spotlight on a diversity of genres and offer screenings of undiscovered gems across its Australian Showcase, Accent on Asia, International Panorama, Backbeat, Next Gen and Documentaries series as well as This Sporting Life, which returns after a one-year hiatus.

Our review of I'm So Excited from ScreenAnarchy colleague Brian Clark can be found here.

With the Festival's First Glance and Next Gen programs already revealed, films direct from Cannes will be announced on 17 June followed by the launch of the full MIFF program on 2 July.
