China Box Office: STAR TREK Boldly Goes Into China

J. J. Abrams' interstellar sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, scores an impressive opening on the mainland, earning over RMB150 million in its first 6 days on release, and knocking Peter Chan's American Dreams in China off the top of the box office chart.

Rank Title Origin 27/5-2/6 (US$) Total (US$) Days on Release

9 Oblivion USA $1.05 $23.49 24
10 So Young China $0.90 $114.71 38

In under a week, Star Trek has earned more money than Tom Cruise's own science-fiction offering, Oblivion, which has been in the charts for 24 days. Despite losing pole position, Dreams still managed to net a further RMB110 million last week, and now stands at RMB423 million since opening less than 3 weeks ago. Other new entries include homegrown animated films Happy Little Submarine 3 and The Adventures of Sinbad 2013, which fell either side of Fox's monster hit, The Croods in the Top 5. The prehistoric adventure has now pulled in close to RMB400 million, and has held firm in the Top 5 for seven straight weeks. Marvel's Iron Man 3 and Zhao Wei's So Young, the two early smashes of the summer, are both winding down, pulling in around RMB17 million between them.

This week sees the release of Andy Lau actioner Switch, which seems by all accounts to be apeing the success of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and will certainly be hoping to get in on some of that film's box office action. Romance Touch of the Light also takes a bow this week, while Zack Snyder's Man of Steel has been confirmed as opening on 20 June, less than a week after debuting in the USA and a full 7 days before its Hong Kong opening.
