Director Francis Lawrence is keeping tensions and stakes high in the second installment of Lionsgate's big screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' novels. Jennifer Lawrence reprises her role as Katnis Everdeen, hero of Sector 12 and winner of the brutal bloodsport, The Hunger Games, that supposedly keeps the post-apocalyptic country at bay. Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth also return as the two dreamy boys vying for her affections, while Donald Sutherland and new addition Philip Seymour Hoffman scheme to destroy the plucky young lady before her victory rallies the nation into a full-scale rebellion.
Personally I was a big fan of the first film and am very much looking forward to the rest of the series. It amuses me that the most audible critics cite this as nothing more than Battle Royale for Twilight fans, but I'm of the opinion that anything that manages to successfully bridge the gap between action, horror, sci-fi and a healthy female audience can only be a good thing. We want girls to like the things we like - and The Hunger Games is here to help make that happen.
