According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chan's production company JC Group International will be collaborating with Beijing production & distribution company Talent International Media Group to bring the as-yet untitled project to the screen, and have apparently hired Joe "Bachelor Party 2" Longino to write the script.
Based on an original idea by Chan, the film casts him as a cop on the trail of an American gambler who skips out of Macau without paying his casino debts. The film is described as "a two-hander action comedy" so could well go down the same path as Rush Hour, teaming Jackie with a Western detective and have the mis-matched duo overcome their initial differences and learn to get along - while kicking ass and cracking wise as they get the job done. Settings for the film include Macau, Hong Kong, Mainland China and Eastern Europe, with TIMG financing the project as a Chinese co-production, meaning it is likely to get lots of exposure and a big release at this end, and also credits Chan as a producer.
Personally, I can't imagine too many people are getting excited by this news, as Chan's track record in English language action comedies has been patchy at best. His last genuinely decent English language film was in Harald Zwart's 2010 remake of The Karate Kid, which hardly fits the mould of this new project. In fact, barring Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon, has Jackie Chan ever made this formula work?
