Congratulations are in order for all involved in the horror anthology V/H/S as Magnolia ponied up the cash for the North American rights to the film.
A quick browse of my Twitter feed this morning alerted me to this news and over on Simon Barrett's he wrote, "Seriously. Thrilled. I've always wanted to have a film distributed by Magnolia. This is so cool". Barrett of course one half of the dynamic duo, along with Adam Wingard, who brought us the TIFF Midnight Madness hit You're Next.Several distributors had expressed interest in the found-footage-within-found-footage creeper, which follows a group of petty criminals who are tasked with finding a VHS tape in a remote and rundown house, only to discover an entire trove of recorded nastiness there. The horror anthology film was helmed by six directors: Adam Wingard, Glenn McQuaid, Radio Silence, David Bruckner, Joe Swanberg and Ti West.Roxanne Benjamin, Gary Binkow and Brad Miska produced the project, which was written by McQuaid, Bruckner, West, Simon Barrett, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, Justin Martinez, Chad Villella and Nicholas Tecosky.
Magnolia will no doubt release the film under its usual strategy, one month of VOD then a theatrical release to follow. No word yet on other international territories.
Be sure to read Ryan's review from Sundance.
