Francesc Morales made Humanimal last year, which had a strange little trailer that we ran. The finished product ended up hitting a few festivals, though I haven't been able to find any reviews. Nonetheless, the director has moved on to a new project that sounds quite personal. Via Screen Daily, word comes that Apio Verde has begun shooting. And according to an article on the Chilean news site Nacion, Morales says that he began to write the script on the recommendation of his psychiatrist, and makes reference to his own personal history. He described the film as a social drama that turns into a horror movie.
Chile is one of five countries in the world where therapeutic abortion is illegal. (Therapeutic abortion refers to cases where the mother's life is in danger, the fetus is unviable, and pregnancies resulting from rape.) It's a hot topic in the country, where the issue has been placed before the Senate for the first time since therapeutic abortion was banned in 1989.
The promotional image, which comes from the official Facebook page, is quite arresting, featuring star Catherine Mozoyer. A teaser is set to unroll tomorrow at Ventana Sur, a Latin American film market in Buenos Aires, and we'll be on the lookout for any more information on the film.
