First trailer for Luc Besson's THE LADY sees Michelle Yeoh inspire a nation.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been a political figure and prisoner for most of her life. Educated at Oxford University in England, she returned to her motherland of Burma in 1988 to lead the pro-democracy movement against the country's military junta. At the 1990 election her party won 59% of the vote and 392 0f the 485 seats in parliament. But instead of taking control of a nation that clearly wanted her in power, Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest, where she remained for 15 of the next 21 years.

French writer/producer/director Luc Besson brings her incredible story to the screen with an already highly-praised central performance by Michelle Yeoh, and ably supported by David Thewlis as her late husband Michael Aris, whose story is even more tragic. 

THE LADY appears to be far weightier subject matter than Besson is used to - his only other notable attempt at an historical biopic was the poorly received THE MESSENGER, starring Milla Jovovich as Joan of Arc. Here's hoping that THE LADY steers closer to THE BIG BLUE, and by the looks of the first teaser trailer, Besson is certainly aiming for something weighty, heroic and hopefully substantial.
