The Children of Earth mini-series made me a believer but I wanted to wait until I could see this show on Bluray from beginning to end before I dove in all the way. Snappy dialogue, solid characters and great creature effects made this a more than worthy spinoff from the Doctor Who-verse. Torchwood, for the uninitiated, is an elite investigation team led by a human immortal, Captain Jack Harkness, who has lived on earth since the 19th century. To reveal anything more might rob the series of some of the charm that made it such a huge hit. The word Torchwood is itself an anagram of Doctor Who but anyone expecting this to be a Who clone is in for a big surprise. It does have that stark look and has been called Doctor Who for adults but if anything it seems broader in scope and more invested in the characters who populate it.
The packaging offers a thick cardboard box housing all twelve discs in a book style format. The only complaint here is that the discs each slip into the cardboard sleeves that form the pages rather than clipping into protective plastic holders. This is a minor complaint. Extras include commentaries on every episode, featurettes, deleted scenes, outtakes and all the Torchwood Declassified material that was on the DVD sets. Torchwood has been available on Blu but never in a set this nice.
