Morgan Spurlock may be a more effective promoter than filmmaker, but he's certainly been willing to put his name behind worthy movies that might otherwise be ignored.
How to Fold a Flag is the latest release under his "Morgan Spurlock Presents" label. Due out on digital platforms on May 23 -- i.e., via streaming and on demand services including Netflix, Hulu.com, Amazon, VUDU, and CinemaNow -- the film, directed by Michael Tucker and Petra Epperlein, is a follow-up to the duo's pungent war doc
Gunner Palace, this time following soldiers returning home to the US and dealing with their combat experiences "in a country largely indifferent to their service," according to the description in the press release, which you can read in its entirety at the
Virgil Films website.
Though I haven't seen
Flag, I can testify that
Gunner Palace is quite powerful. I saw the duo's
Bulletproof Salesman at SXSW three years ago and it was one of the highlights of the fest for me (here are
some comments I wrote elsewhere);
Kurt Halfyard caught their latest,
Fightville (about mixed martial arts), at Hot Docs, and was suitably impressed.
How to Fold a Flag, dating from 2009, sounds like another good entry in the increasingly essential filmography of Tucker and Epperlein, and one that will worth seeking out. It will also be released June 14 on DVD.
