For those not familiar with the premise of the show, Pete and Myka are two Secret Service agents abruptly transfered to a remote warehouse in South Dakota. They are charged with the task of investigating the weird and paranormal events triggered by artifacts; supernatural souvenirs of historical figures that have an energy of their own. The warehouse is supervised by Artie and is a large storage facility for these trinkets, mementos and objects. Some would say he is crazier than the collection itself but he is nonetheless brilliant and is the anchor for his new team. Insert spunky and punky Claudia, the young and beautiful tech geek, and add a dash of Leena, the young and beautiful B&B owner where Pete and Myka live who also stands in as Saul's calming influence and you have you five characters who look after and look out for the contents of Warehouse 13.
Warehouse 13 has an undeniable charm. I think it is credited to the chemistry between Pete [Eddie McClintock] and Myka [Joanne Kelly]. Pete's the funny man. Myka's the straight... man. They work well off each other and I think it is a good partnership. And for the most part the scripts do manage to elicit a few guffaws from myself. But what makes WH13 work is it is simply fun. And that's alright. It may be fluff. But it is decent fluff.
However, the cliffhanger finale from season 1 is tidied up very quickly in the premiere episode for season two. And while some might say it has to be that way I would have liked the certainty of Artie's [Saul Rubinek] survival of the explosion to have gone on a little longer. Hang Pete and Myka out there a bit longer. We knew he was going to survive. I would have liked to have seen Pete and Myka try to continue on their own for a bit before Artie inevitably returned from the dead. But he is the brains of their operation and a walking encyclopaedia of the weird. They're still taking baby steps I guess. Bah. Beggers cannot be choosers.
Now, we're out with one baddie and in with a new one by the end of the season premiere. MacPherson [Roger Rees] unleashes a new foe unto the world who will return in later episodes this season. They will be WH13's interpretation of one of the Fathers of Science Fiction and I guarantee they will turn heads. Science Fiction is sexy once again and I'm not talking about cosplay at a convention. However, I will say this to Joanne Kelly/Myka. If SyFy does have a WH13 panel at ComCon this summer you could do no wrong by wearing that outfit from episode two. You know which one I am talking about. Instant and certifiable fanboy love my dear. Instant I tell you!
Guest stars this year include Jewel Staite and Sean Maher from Firefly. They'll be in the second episode so for Firefly fans there will be no waiting. SyFy is gonna have to do something about getting Jewel onto another show now that SG Atlantis is done. As a special treat this year there will be crossover episodes between WH13 and Eureka. Look forward to those episodes in the first week of August. Neil Grayston/Fargo will make an appearance on the show. The list goes on. Lindsay Wagner. Tia Carrere.
WH13 airs on Tuesday nights on SyFy starting on July 6th.
Still to come - Eureka, Haven, and if you're good... Fact or Fake: Paranormal Files.
