It was just like week that we shared the first trailer for Karl Lemieux's feature film Maudite Poutine (Shambles) with you all. Lemieux made his first big splash internationally as the visual component of hugely acclaimed Montreal based musical act Godspeed You Black Emperor and given the general response to his feature it would appear very much that Lemieux has emerged as a force to be taken on purely his own terms.
Caught stealing drugs from the wrong people, 27 year old Vincent is in trouble and on the run from the local mob. Fleeing to the backwoods, Vincent unexpectedly reconnects with his brother Michel with whom he’d cut ties many years ago. As he tries to maintain the semblance of a normal life hanging out with friends and playing in his band, Vincent witnesses his brother’s own turbulent downward spiral. MAUDITE POUTINE draws us into a darkly dystopian rural world, a place in which violence pervades the everyday but humanity still manages to shine through the cracks.
Having just freshly premiered in Venice before heading to Toronto, you may be wondering how you can see the film yourself if you don't happen to have access to one of those two monster festivals. And the answer is that, well, you actually do. Online streaming service Festival Scope is once again backing the Venice Sala Web, a time limited screening room of select titles from the Venice festival. Maudite Poutine is one of those titles and they are giving away five free passes to view the film to lucky ScreenAnarchy readers.
