We are long time fans of Japanese writer-director Mitani Koki around these parts thanks to a long run of incredibly high end comedies, films that jump through multiple genres while maintaining Mitani's distinct voice and a comedy style that borrows heavily from the slapstick manners comedies of golden era Hollywood.

And our love for Mitani is certainly not an unusual thing, the man is a giant in the Japanese film industry with his work routinely topping the local box office and that is, once again, the case with his newest effort - scifi comedy Galaxy Turnpike - which opened this week in Japan and immediately vaulted to the top of the local box office.

Set in a roadside diner on the transit route between earth and a remote planet this has all the hallmarks of Mitani's work, featuring a large ensemble cast, broad comedy anchored by Mitani's sharp writing, and fantastic production values. Take a look at the teaser below!
