Based partially on the novel by Michael Punke, the film follows Leonardo DiCaprio as real-life 1800s frontiersman Hugh Glass as he is left for dead in the far reaches of the American Wilderness.
While I am often wary of the depiction of indigenous peoples in Hollywood movies such as this, there is no denying that the just released trailer offers some of the most breathtaking cinematography of the year. Iñárritu's man-behind-the-camera, the indomitable Emmanuel Lubezki, seems to not only be inspired by wide angle Westerns, but by Eastern epics like the medieval Marketa Lazarova and WWII nightmare Come And See.
Whatever else The Revenant proves to be beyond visually stunning remains to be known... that is until its U.S. release on December 25.
