This year's eclectic lineup will feature 234 films from 45 countries, including a record 64 world premieres. Korean films return to the festival's signature Bucheon Choice competition, following last year's absence, which has selected Han Jun-hee's recent Cannes Critics' Week thriller Coin Locker Girl and the world premiere of Lee Seo's Tattooist.
Looking at the fest's other sections, BiFan is fielding a particularly strong Japanese lineup this year, including Miike Takashi's Director Fortnight screening Yakuza Apocalypse, Fukusaku Kinji's newly restored Battles Without Honor or Humanity, and no less than two Sono Sion international premieres (Tag and Love and Peace) which will feature in a program dedicated to the gonzo filmmaker.
Other highlights include the horror-romance Spring by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, Ted Geoghegan's horror pic We Are Still Here and Anurag Kashyap's new period film Bombay Velvet. ScreenAnarchy favourites Turbo Kid, Deathgasm, Port of Call and Slow West also screen.
Beyond Sono, BiFan will also be hosting sidebars dedicated to Mexican genre films, Korean independent genre films, classic sci-fi and 3D films from the Korean Academy of Film Arts, as well as a retrospective on HK actor Simon Yam.
ScreenAnarchy will be on the ground in Bucheon come mid-July, braving the Korean summer heat and untold amounts of BBQ, soju and karaoke. Stay tuned for more detailed breakdowns of this year's lineup in the coming weeks.
