These are tough times: budgets keep getting cut and small companies are having a hard time keeping their head above water. But what about monsters?
In Employee of the Month, Swiss director Olivier Beguin shows a gallery of various creatures struggling to get a job. As the short's teaser outlines it, unemployment is the great evil of our time. Thankfully, the Agency for Professional Reorientation for Myths and Legends can guide creatures into their professional life.
The short stars Catriona MacColl (Lucio Fulci's City of the Living Dead and The Beyond) as the social adviser who helps demons, fairies and mummies to find jobs that could suit their special condition. With fun and gory bits, Employee of the Month offers situation comedy - have you ever imagined how a zombie could do as a cashier? - that tackles the mythology of fantastic cinema.
Employee of the Month was completed a couple of years before Beguin's first feature, Chimères, a low budget bad romance with vampires (read Ben's review here), but stopped its mighty festival run only recently. The short won the Silver Méliès at Trieste Science+Fiction as well as several audience awards at various festivals.
