Busan 2014's THE INSEMINATOR Banned In Vietnam

If you're in BIFF right now, you can see the poster of the Vietnamese independent film The Inseminator (Người truyền giống), along the streets of Busan. And if you have a chance, go watch it now because it's banned in Vietnam. Without any official document or speech from the Vietnam Film Department, it's just simply banned and the newspaper won't be able to talk about it.

Here's the sypnosis and you may know the reason after reading it:

Mr. Boi, who senses that his life is coming to an end, has been isolated on a remote mountain top with his intensely marriageable daughter and his mentally handicapped son. As he prepares for his death, his last mission is to continue the family's male lineage by finding a bride for his son Maize. Unfortunately, his frequent visits to the love market end in failure, driving his into a state of madness. His obsession with ensuring the lineage leads to irrevocable tragedy and calls for great sacrifice by his daughter. 

The debut feature by Vietnamese female independent filmmaker Kim Quy Bui visually recreates the extreme patriarchal obsession that focuses on reproductive sex, male lineage genealogy and familism. And by mixing Vietnamese tradition and the mythical world with a family's cinematic reality, the director builds a unique sexual world of her own. That's something kinda taboo in Vietnam.

With the limited budget of her own and funding from oversea sources, the female filmmaker Kim Quy Bui struggled to make this debut for quite a long time. The Inseminator won the 2014 ACF Post Production Fund and to go to several film festivals around the world. But after this, the plan may vary.
