Here's an intriguing project: An omnibus of short films with Alex de la Iglesia, Hideo Nakata, Amos Gitai, Guillermo Arriaga, Mira Nair and others tackling the subject of faith. The film is called Words with Gods and it premieres this Saturday at the Venice Film Festival. Based on a concept by Guillermo Arriaga, Words with Gods features nine powerful stories of faith, created by some of the world's most celebrated filmmakers. A dramatic spectrum of beliefs are represented, with each filmmaker speaking about the one closest to their lives: Warwick Thornton deals with Aboriginal Spirituality, Héctor Babenco with Umbanda, Mira Nair with Hinduism, Hideo Nakata with Shinto Buddhism, Amos Gitai with Judaism, Álex de la Iglesia with Catholicism, Emir Kusturica with Orthodox Christianity,Bahman Ghobadi with Islam and Guillermo Arriaga with Atheism. The film is a panoramic, global story that confronts birth and death, fateful choices and faith lost and found.Curated by Peruvian-Spanish Nobel Literature laureate, Mario Vargas Llosa, the film's music is composed by Peter Gabriel.Words with Gods is the first film in a planned series of four omnibus features titled 'The Heartbeat of the World'. The next in the series, Encounters, will tackle sex; the third Polis will look at human rights and politics; and the final installment Into the Bloodstream will cover people's relationships with the often illicit substances they ingest. Guillermo Arriaga will continue to offer creative leadership on the project with co-producers Alex Garcia and Argentinian Lucas Akoskin.
