Though this is a big win for the cast and crew of the show, it's also a big sign that the word 'cancellation' will rarely mean what it used to mean in this digital age of streaming content. Niche audiences are what the online world consists of, and Community has a long standing niche to serve, which has always been more 'online' anyway. And while Yahoo Screen (as their original content wing is called) isn't really able to go to bat with the likes of Netflix or Hulu, nabbing Community is a sure sign they're gearing up to.
So come sometime after Labor Day, we'll be getting 13 more episodes of Community. This season's cast (sans Donald Glover and Jonathan Banks) are all signed on, as is creator/showrunner Dan Harmon, who had the following to say on the show's return:
"I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo. I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!"Six seasons, indeed. And a movie? Sure, why not.
