Cannes 2014 Preview: Un Certain Regard and Midnight Screenings

ScreenAnarchy's Cannes coverage continues, today with a look at our most anticipated films in the Un Certain Regard banner, and throwing in two midnight screenings as well.

The Un Certain Regard section was created in 1978, in part to give some extra room for less than brand-name filmmakers. The festival is famously loyal to its favorite few, and short of making a total dud, when a filmmaker graduates to OC big league, that's where they tend to stay (this year, for example, a full 2/3 of the directors gunning for the Palme are previous Official Competition award winners).

Un Certain Regard, if not breaking up the old boys club exactly, is at least meant to broaden the playing field. Very often, some of the most interesting films can be found in UCR.

Will that be the case this year? We'll know soon enough! Check back here throughout the festival, or follow us on twitter, @ScreenAnarhcy, @filmfest_ca and @becroll for ongoing coverage.
