Gulaab Gang is a film based on the real like exploits of the Gulabi (Pink) Gang, a troop of pink sari-wearing female vigilantes working across northern India to protect women from sexual violence. The Gulabi Gang has been featured in numerous international news publications and a very well-received documentary, but this narrative adaptation looks like it's planning on building on the already pretty incredible story of these women and making them into full-fledged filmi heroines.
In addition to some fascinating source material, the film also has a stellar cast attached that make it one of the most hotly anticipated films of 2014. The above mentioned Madhuri Dixit ruled the box office in the late '80s and early '90s with an iron fist, and behind her here are Juhi Chawla, another marquee heroine, and Mahi Gill, another starlet with a few films under her belt. The producer of Gulaab Gang is Ra.One director Anubhav Sinha, who seems to have taken his windfall from that project and turned toward producing in a big way. His involvement, along with the big name lead actresses, gives Gulaab Gang a serious chance at box office success.
I'm very excited to see what Dixit, Chawla, and Sen do with this material. From some of the behind the scenes photos that are floating around, it appears that the film will be not so much dramatic as action-packed, which could either be really fantastic or godawful, only time will tell.
Gulaab Gang opens in theaters in March of 2014.
