This year will not only see the release of two new films from Studio Ghibli, but also a documentary about the famous animation studio co-founded by producer Suzuki Toshio and directors Miyazaki Hayao and Takahata Isao. Titled Yume to Kyōki no Ōkoku (The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness), the documentary is currently being filmed and will be released in Japan this fall.
Directed by Sunada Mami (Ending Note: Death of a Japanese Salaryman), it will focus on the three studio co-founders as they work on Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises) and Kaguya-hime no Monogatari (The Tale of Princess Kaguya). The director has received praise from the studio's staff for being 'invisible' as she manages to film them without interrupting their work.
Regarding the use of the word 'Madness' in the title of her film, Sunada has given the following explanation: "I think that having a dream entails having a bit of madness, no matter what the profession. There are times when you will go to extremes, and times when you are feared by others for that."
